During the past nine years, PYC has regularly performed with the Oregon Symphony, the Oregon Ballet Theater, Pink Martini and the Portland Youth Philharmonic. In Nov. 2011 we joined the Eugene Symphony and Eugene Symphony Chorus to sing John Adams "Transmigration of Souls". And in March 2012 we are invited to sing for ACDA's regional conference in Seattle. Some of the highlights of our past seasons have been singing: • "Joy to the World" a Pink Martini CD sold through Starbucks • Video Games Live with the Oregon Symphony • A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the Oregon Ballet Theatre • Lord of the Rings with the Oregon Symphony Orchestra and Portland Symphonic Choir • A collaboration with the Portland Youth Philharmonic and Obo Addy • John Adam’s, On the Transmigration of Souls with the Oregon Symphony and the Portland Symphonic Choir. Additionally, the younger choirs had opportunities to perform at The Grotto, PYC’s annual winter and spring concerts at Trinity Cathedral and on field trips to sing for adult retirement communities, churches and local schools. Pacific Youth Choir’s National Activities: PYC was honored nationally by being invited to attend and perform at the following events: In the spring of 2010, Chanticleer organized their First National Youth Choral Festival. PYC’s Chamber Choir spent four days in intensive interaction with the members of Chanticleer, who coached them in all areas critical to the choral art. The climactic event, “The Singing Life,” featured Chanticleer and the choirs in a daylong residency at San Francisco’s Davies Symphony Hall, where the choirs were given the opportunity to perform individually on the stage, and attend vocal master-classes led by mezzo-sopranos Frederica von Stade and San Francisco Opera’s Zheng Cao. In March 2009, A.C.D.A. (American Choral Directors Association) celebrated their 50th anniversary at their National Convention in Oklahoma City. Pacific Youth Choir was the only youth choir from the northwest, selected and invited to perform at this conference. Pacific Youth Choir’s International Connections: In the fall of 2009, the ancient/modernist music of Estonian composer Veljo Tormis was performed at First United Methodist Church in Portland as Pacific Youth Choir joined four other choirs, including an Estonian Men’s Choir yet again. The singers were conducted by Veljo Tormis’ colleague Hirvo Surva. |
