Becoming

Season 22 • 2024–2025 Annual Report

A Season of Becoming

Dear Friends,

For the first time in PYC's history, we're sharing an annual report—a chance to step back and see the full picture of what a single season makes possible. (Next year, we plan to get this into your hands even sooner.)

Season 22 was remarkable, and you made it happen.

Every singer who walks through our doors is in a season of becoming—growing into the person they're meant to be. Last season, we watched 219 young people from 114 different schools do exactly that.

They performed at the Schnitzer with the Oregon Symphony. They worked alongside Chanticleer. They filled our December concerts with over 1,000 friends and family members. And along the way, something deeper happened: they found their confidence, their community, and their voice.

That energy is real. We're in our own season of becoming—building on two decades of excellence while investing in the systems and programs that will serve young people for generations to come.

None of this happens without you. Your investment makes it possible for every singer—regardless of their family's financial situation—to access this transformative experience. Thank you for shaping tomorrow's voices with us.

With gratitude,

Andrew Hansen, Executive Director

Chris Maunu, Artistic Director

Season Highlights

On Stage with the Oregon Symphony

Our middle school choir Cascadia made their Oregon Symphony debut at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. For many singers, it was their first time on a professional stage—and a glimpse of what's possible when you commit to something bigger than yourself.

Learning from the Best

When Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer came to Portland, our singers got a rare opportunity: an intensive workshop with masters of the choral art. The experience pushed our high schoolers to new levels of precision and expression.

A Community Gathers

Our December concerts drew over 1,000 audience members—our strongest attendance since before the pandemic. More than a performance, it was a homecoming: families, alumni, and community members filling every seat to celebrate what these young singers have built together.

An Evening Under the Stars

PYC's first-ever gala transformed the OMSI Planetarium into an unforgettable evening of music and community. Guests watched our singers perform beneath a canopy of stars while raising critical funds to keep PYC accessible to every young person who wants to sing.

What Becoming Looks Like

Every week, young people walk into rehearsal carrying whatever their day held—stress from school, uncertainty about themselves, the ordinary challenges of growing up. And every week, something shifts. Parents see it first.

This is what becoming looks like. Not a sudden transformation, but a gradual unfolding—supported by expert instruction, genuine community, and the belief that every young person has something extraordinary to offer.
